The Sword of Justice & Other Stuff

 How Shall I Say...

There was a guy being interviewed on a radio talk program recently who used that phrase repeatedly - - "How shall I say, blah blah blah." It was fairly apparent that he didn't REALLY wonder how he would say it, since he was sayin' it.

But that's not what brings us here today...

That verbal tic reminded me of a conversation I had recently with a male friend, shortly after we'd had a bit of a set-to about some communication stuff. One of his male friends was telling him the exact same thing I had told him, and he appeared to be listening more attentively and with what seemed to be more agreement to the man than when I had said the identical things, and it pissed me off a bit. See? That's the problem right there - - "...a bit."

There's a massive difference in how women and men (in general) express their opinions - - of course you already know this, but I'm rediscovering it in the context of prolonged exposure to some male types with whom I'm working on a regular basis. Here's the essential diff:

No matter how little factual basis they have for what they're saying, MEN will state their opinion with such force and conviction that it just doesn't seem possible to take issue with 'em. For instance, in the conversation referenced above, the male was saying things like "You've gotta do such & such" or "You have to..."

On the other hand, or chromosome, WOMEN will hedge and soften their stated opinions, no matter how solid their facts and information. We might say "might" a lot - - I also think we could say "I think that's what you could consider doing." See????

When talking about this dynamic with my male friend, we somehow got on the subject of premenstrual syndrome. Funny how any discussion of rational disagreement between men & women will lead to PMS....coincidence? He STATED with great conviction that all pre-menopausal women are irrational and emotional and PMSing four days each month. When I contradicted him and said that most women have ONE day prior to menstruation when hormones drive emotional reaction that isn't exactly rational and that we're perfectly fine during actual menstruation, he vociferously disagreed with me and insisted that his version was correct - - in spite of the fact that I have two X chromosomes and have scads of woman street cred and he has NONE. We laughed about this being an illustration of our male-female communication craziness, and this was the conclusion we came to:

MEN need to have more facts behind their certainty

WOMEN need to have more certainty behind their facts

It's now become a standing joke between us and in this male-dominated work group of which I'm a strange "one of these things is not like the others" part. It's like being Jane Goodall observing the gorillas - - really, not much difference at all, down to the self-stimulation, grooming and belching.

And that's a FACT.

Peter Douglas Ericson - - Unaffiliated in Colorado HD 44

I'm an out Democrat in Douglas County, CO. This is what most Democrats in Douglas County look like: We're in the minority at the present, but we're growing - - the most recent presidential election mobilized the closeted and the momentum continues with our U.S. senate primary race and some truly interesting state contests.

So. Why is an out, loud Dem in Douglas County serving as campaign manager for an unaffiliated candidate in House District 44? Because he rocks. Because an unaffiliated candidate actually stands a chance to win in HD 44. And because what he says and what he will do matter more than the letter after his name.

That name is Peter Douglas Ericson. At 25, he's barely old enough to run for the House of Representatives, but he's lived a lot in his quarter century. You hear the old saw "old soul" quite a bit, but this is what it really means - - Peter is wise beyond his years, eerily able to read a room, brave in ways that can't be explained by his young testosterone, ethical in a sense that continues to surprise. His smarts transcend book learning - - it's an intelligence that isn't teachable.

As a state representative, Peter will have the chance to sponsor five pieces of legislation and this coincides with his five major platform planks:

> Immigration Reform - - Peter is a huge advocate for humane, logical, ethical immigration reform that supports guest workers who do jobs that U.S. citizens can't or won't do (even in times of high unemployment) and that allows an efficient path to citizenship.

> Criminal Justice System Reform - - We spend far too much on locking people up. The United States continues to lead the world in people under judicial system supervision; it's time to think systemically and creatively about our responses to crime, particularly nonviolent crimes involving property or substances. Peter would like to divert capital construction monies to other approaches proven to be effective, such as quality education and community-based resources.

> Education - - Peter would like to work to find ways to support administrators and teachers in doing a great job, particularly at the K-12 level. Colorado is 49th in school funding in the nation, which is criminal in a state that enjoys such abundance in many senses. One of our best investments is in education - - a quality education can prop up protective factors that prevent delinquency and other high risk activities.

> Community Resource Development - - This is another area of sad underfunding. For example, Colorado is 50th in the nation in funding for mental health services. Where do our folks with mental health issues end up? In the criminal system. Peter supports system-of-care approaches that can save money by keeping people in their communities, attached to important protective elements such as family, school and work, while receiving more and better treatment that is customized to their particular needs and strengths.

> Job Creation - - Peter supports buy-local campaigns to encourage Colorado manufacturing, production and service-based businesses. Making Colorado more sustainable is one of his primary goals in working toward fiscal health for our state.

If Peter is elected to the House of Representatives in November, he'll be the first unaffiliated candidate to hold a H of R seat since 1891. He might also be the longest-haired and most tattooed person ever to hold an H of R seat! He's one of a kind - - there'll never be another Peter Douglas Ericson, and he'll make the House of Representatives better.

Vote Ericson in November!

 I'M A LIAR!

Never say never - - I should have it tattooed on my nose where I can see it everyday.

I'm back, at least for a while, in support of the political candidate for whom I'm a campaign manager, another candidate for whom I'm a volunteer, and political issues that are relevant in the midterm elections.

Thank goodness I've got all that free time to dispose of.....

I Think I Just Came Back to Say Goodbye

That must've been it.

Revisiting after a bunch of months away has been instructive and it made me think - - I have zero interest in writing a boring online diary, and the stuff that matters demands less anonymity and more commitment.

I hope to meet a few of you in person some day. But, I'm gonna shut the sucker down as soon as I download some of what I've written.

Didn't want to go without a final goodbye - - all the best!
